This wonderful little oak stool is English. It was made in the early 19th century, possibly even a bit earlier. There are hand holds cut in the top so I suppose it may have been a milking stool. It was certainly used where it needed to be moved easily and often. The oak is a wonderful dark color with nice figure in the wood. The splayed legs are nicely shaped and securely cross wedged in position. The top is detailed with a simple, elegant carved edge profile. The legs are very sturdy and don't wobble at all. There are some age splits in a leg and on the top, but all are stable. You'll also find a few old (and non-active) worm or insect holes in the legs. The stool measures 17" x 8" x 9.5" tall. It's a great size to use beside a chair in lieu of a side table. It's plenty large enough to hold a beverage and your favorite book.
