This Victorian gilt composition frame was put in this shadow box frame when it was new. Since it has had little exposure to the environment the gold is still gleaming as brightly as it was when it was made. This was a common practice in the later 19th century. The gold frame is surrounded with russet velvet. The outer box frame is painted black. One of the nice things about this style frame is that it will stand on its own so it can be placed on a shelf or table. This one is fairly small and would be great to display a special piece of jewelry or other item best displayed under glass. The overall measurements are 11.5" x 9.74". The opening measures about 4" x 5". The frame is in very good condition with wear to the edges of the black outer frame. There is a small piece of the gesso decoration missing from a corner of the gold frame. Two of the corners have cracks in the gesso, but are stable. Nice piece with a dramatic look.
