Franz Schmidt Character Baby Doll- 1295 -55 -22" Breather-Tongue
This is a wonderful, Franz Schmidt, big baby doll with the marks 1295 55 on the back of his head. He has breather nostrils and his tongue looks like it should wobble but is stationary. He has a vintage pate and wig replacement which really suits him! The wig is a piece of furry fabric that has been glued on his head and there is glue residue as pictured. He has big blue sleep eyes with replaced eyelashes as well as original painted lashes. He has nice feathered brows. His original glass eyes tend to show the whites of his eyes at the bottom and would benefit from being reset. I have lifted his pate and gently stuffed his head with tissue paper for shipping. His head is free from breaks and his colouring is wonderful! There is some lifted original paint on the side where his wig has been glued. This is under the wig and doesn't show with hair on. His jointed composition baby body is in great condition. He will come wearing old cotton socks and oil cloth shoes. The left shoe button is very hard to undo so I left it on for photographs for fear of damaging it. His outfit consists of raw silk bloomers, a cotton vest with buttons and ties, raw silk blouse and attached blue knit shorts (some holes) his clothing appears to be as old as he is and was purchased on him when my friend bought him years ago. This guy very much appeals to me, he really resembles a child and displays beautifully. Here is some information about the Franz Schmidt company. Franz Schmidt founded his doll company in Georgenthal, Thuringia, Germany in 1890, was also known as Puppenfabrik Georgenthal. The Simon & Halbig Company supplied the bisque heads, designed specifically for Franz Schmidt's dolls. Schmidt was very innovative in the doll industry providing many improvements such as; improved wood joints, pierced nostrils (called breathers), movable tongue, eye bar and doll voice boxes. Franz Schmidt made dolls sized 6 to 42" tall, Dolly face, Character Baby and Character Dolls with bisque heads, glass or painted eyes, kid or composition body, all of whom are very high quality. Sometimes a z is found in Schmidt's doll marking, this is believed to stand for zentimeter, German for centimeter. Be sure to browse my store for many wonderful dolls and collectible.
