China Doll Head Currier & Ives 5 Inches Fine Example

Made by the Alt, Beck & Gottschalck Porcelain Factory, this particular head has more vivid coloring than is typically found as well as extremely light wear to the hair paint on the back. Usually, the coloring found on these heads reveals very light eyes and cheek color, so finding this particular head with vivid coloring, including generous cheek color, is a real plus.

The features include shaded blue irises in deep blue, black lash lines, red lid lines, nostril accents and shaded lip color. The molded ears are very finely sculpted, and the shoulder plate, which is in perfect condition, has four sew holes and is impressed with the size number "7" on the back plate.

The head measures 5-1/4" from base of plate to top of head. 4-1/8" across the shoulders and 2-7/8" front to back on the "inside" of the shoulder plate. This would make a doll approximately 20" when mounted on the correct body. (See listing DP-A934 16-1/2" body which would be the correct size and style, though with parian limbs vs glazed china.)

Condition: Excellent. The only paint wear is on the upper back of the hair in back and front on the high parts and is so significantly light it barely needs mentioning. There is also a tiny raised dot between the eyebrows which only seems to show at certain angles. I've shown it in the magnified close-up by creating a shadow with the lighting. There is very light speckling which is typical of these early chinas. There are no cracks, chips, or repairs.

Value for a complete doll on correct body would be $900 and up in this size. Priced as head only at a bargain price for this quality and condition.
