Antique Japanese Emperor and Empress Dolls, 19th Century Samurai, Geisha
This is an elegant couple of antique Japanese dolls consisting of an Emperor and Empress on their original thrones. Superbly crafted in Japan during 1867 to 1912. The dolls and display are approximately 150 years old. Wonderfully crafted wood head and hands with a surface made of a oyster shell powder mixture finish. Fabrics are made of silk and silk brocade with hand embroidery. They have inset eyes. The dolls are from the Doll's Festival held each year on March 3rd. Also called Ningyo dolls or the Imperial Couple. Dolls are displayed in Japanese homes celebrating the girls that live there. Families collect for years and add to their collection each year to display for the following March. They are dressed in Period costumes to wish the girls good health and long life. These dolls are in good condition; the Empress hair is showing signs of age (please see picture). These dolls are all original with no restoration. Both the Emperor and Empress come in their original wooden boxes. I am not familiar with the writing on each box nor the labels on the bottom of each doll. See pictures. Dimensions of each doll is 12" x 12" x 12". Each doll sits on a throne and on the throne the dolls height is 14".
