Rare and Delightful Circa 1800 Prattware Pratt Ware Baby in Cradle

A charming, late 18th/early 19th century Prattware, or Pratt Ware, baby in cradle. The hooded cradle is modeled in a fine basket weave design with rockers. The baby, with her rosy apple cheeks, is dressed very colorfully and rests her head on a tasseled pillow. It is widely believed these pieces were given as christening gifts and date from about 1780 through 1820.

The cradle measures 4" long by 2" wide by 2 7/8" high. It is in very good undamaged condition. There is a very fine, short age line on the inside top of the cradle hood which does not appear through to the outside and there is some kiln debris on the cradle in a couple of spots, which I mention for the sake of accuracy only. There are no other chips, cracks or restorations. The glaze is in very, very nice condition and still very lustrous.

These cream tinted earthenware pieces, with colorful relief decoration painted underglaze, are typically referred to as Pratt Ware although many of the Staffordshire potteries did similar work from the last quarter of the 18th century through the first quarter of the 19th. These very desirable little cradles are becoming quite difficult to find especially in such fine condition.
