An exuberantly carved coquilla nut spice shaker with deep patina and warm lustre dating from the first half of the 19th century. As travel to far away places introduced the English and Europeans to exotic spices, shakers fashioned from all materials became an every day staple of the wealthy. Coquilla nuts are from Brazilian palms and their very hard, ivory-like shell was prized by carvers.
This lovely little shaker stands 4 3/8" and is in very, very good condition. There are two minor chips along the bottom edge...one appears to be right in a burled area of the nut and I would say both are in keeping with expected wear.
