A finely turned mid 19th century English Tunbridge ware three-piece wooden nutmeg grater. The top features an intricate mosaic of colored woods in an eye-catching geometric design and unscrews to reveal the original, metal grater. The bottom unscrews to reveal a storage compartment for the nut.
The grater measures 1 5/8" high by 1 1/2" in diameter across the top. It is in very good condition. There is one tiny chip on the rim of the base. There are no other chips, no cracks and both the top and bottom turn easily and fasten tightly. The wood has a lovely soft luster and there are no missing or loose pieces of mosaic. A very tactile piece!
These pieces were produced in and around the popular 19th century spa town of Tunbridge Wells and usually purchased as souvenirs.
