An exceptional and sumptuous set, it is bound in the finest "veau blonde" (pale yellow Morocco leather).
There are five volumes (in-8, 8" x 5"). The leather bindings are extremely luxurious to the touch and have a "smooth as butter" hand. The cover boards are ornamented by a series of gilt tooled frames: the outer one consists of flowers and hearts, followed by a single gilt filet, a hounds tooth filet, a single filet and finally a band of alternating tulip flowers.
The spines have five gilt tooled raised bands which form compartments that are filled by gilt tooled arabesques. The title and number plate are of deep crimson Morocco leather which is gilt tooled. The end papers are marbled, and an ex-libris is found in each volume, "L de Bonnefoy". The leather turn-ins are sumptuously gilt tooled, the page edges are gilt.
The French text recounts the history of the house of Austria, beginning with Rodolphe of Hapsbourg (1218-1273).
The bindings are in amazing condition, with little wear. The fine leather has darkened very slightly, but otherwise there is little to note. The gilt page edges are shimmering, the crimson plates are not faded, there is little wear to the edges or corners.
This is an exceptional complete set from the very early nineteenth century. This type of binding represents the height of book binding mastery as is evidenced by the astonishing condition of bindings which are more than 200 years old.
