Antique Nineteenth Century French Books: Oeuvres de Corneille circa 1824

A beautiful and superior edition, it was printed by the renowned house of Jules Didot l'aine. The books are sumptuously bound; they are the work of Dauphin, a Lyonnais master book binder from the first part of the nineteenth century.

There are twelve volumes (in-8, 8 3/4" x 5 1/2"). They are bound in the finest of polished navy Morocco calf leather. The cover boards are entirely filled with ornamentation (blind embossed using a custom plate). There is a slightly raised central plaque, framed by a wide gilt tooled frame consisting of arabesques with dividing lines. The gilt tooled frame is then framed by an embossed border (with a design of flowers and twisting ropes).

Each spine has four gilt tooled raised ribs which form five compartments. Two of the compartments hold gilt tooled medallions, the central one is completely filled with a gilt tooled filigree design. The inner leather turn-ins are sumptuously gilt tooled. The end papers are marbled. All page edges are gilt.

The French text contains the classic works of Pierre Corneille (16061684). Corneille was a French tragedian who was one of the three great seventeenth-century French dramatists, along with Molire and Racine. He has been called the founder of French tragedy and produced plays for nearly forty years. This edition contains a frontispiece portrait of Corneille (by Taurel).

The bindings are in exceptional condition for their age. There is very little wear at all (which is amazing). The gilt tooling and page edges remain brilliant. The very detailed and delicate blind embossing is luxurious on the very fine, glossy leather.

This is one of the finest complete sets from the early nineteenth century that we have ever seen. The quality of the bindings is exceptional, the text important, and the condition superb.
