This three volume set is bound in very sumptuous cerise-colored polished Morocco leather. It holds the rare complete text by author Louis Benoit Picard (1769-1828) which is also known as "Le Niais Histoire de Georges Dercy et Sa Famille". Picard was a French playwright as well as director of theatrical productions.
The books are bound in the very classic style of early nineteenth century fashion. The polished cerise colored Morocco leather was very expensive to purchase and was used only for special custom orders. During this period, as in the eighteenth century, nobility chose to have favorite texts bound in luxurious red Morocco leather.
The ornamentation on the bindings is very subtle. Two 1/4" blind embossed decorative frames are found on both cover boards, with a single gilt filet and four gilt circles separating the two designs. The spines each have four raised flat, gilt tooled ribs. Gilt tooling separates the compartments. The title plates are of green Morocco leather with the tile in gilt. Above and below this plate are two bands of gilt tooled "eggs and dots". The endpapers are marbled in brown and yellow. The endpapers are marbled. There is a gilt tooled banner roll along the Morocco leather turn-ins.
All three volumes bear two ex-libris attached to the front endpaper; one a small square with a leaping, winged stag, and another which reads, "Bibliotheque de M. Choppin, Avocat (attorney).
The volumes are in sound and good condition. The cerise color of the bindings has remained remarkably brilliant with slight darkening but no fading. The joints of the bindings are sound. There is slight wear to the corners as is typical with use, but this wear is inconsequential to the stability of the bindings. Each volume measures: 7" x 4" x7/8" thick.
The bindings have all the hallmarks of fine examples of bookbinding: a rare text, bound in rare cerise Morocco leather, with two ancient ex-libris. They will make a find addition to any serious collection.
