This special little book has been embellished with every kind of adornment possible. These books served as religious companions and most often were most often custom made for an individual.
The cover boards have a very deep set, raised Gothic design, with a central cross sitting within a frame with four crosses at each angle. The spine has four raised hubs. The binding is of very fine chocolate brown calf leather that has been gilt tooled by hand along the inner turn-ins. The title has been blind stamped in the second compartment of the spine. The bronze closures are fantastic, with interlocking initials of "M A". They attach to metal bands on each cover board.
The pages have been treated with the utmost luxury, gilt gauffre edges with alternating bands of red. These gauffre edges have a repeating pattern of an oval and a circle.
There is a beautiful color title page engraving which features colorful songbirds on a French blue background. There are two additional black and white engravings to accompany the French text. The text contains religious services for throughout the year, as well as hymns and prayers. It was published in Dijon, France by E. Pellion.
The binding measures: 4 3/4" x 3" and 1 1/4" thick. It is in excellent condition for it's age. The pages are still soundly sewn within the binding. The binding has only minor (an normal) wear to the edges. The gilt gauffre pages are still bright, the design still very visible. The bronze closures operate properly and are still amazingly soundly attached to the cover boards (this is most often not the case).
It is a precious religious book and an absolutely exquisite binding.
