An extensive amount of information is found within this complete set of twelve volumes. Discoveries of of the great explorers are documented. The historically important explorers include: George Shelvock, Christopher Columbus, Gemelli Carreri, Lord Anson, Captain Cook and Bougainville.
The text is in French, the publisher is Fr. Dufart, Pere, Libraire-Editeur (Paris). It is a collection of writings from the great discoveries of the world, both "ancient and modern".
There are five very large fold-out maps by Jean-Baptiste POIRSON (1761-1831), a much revered Parisian geographer.
Black and white maps: Land Masses in the Pacific Ocean (19" x 26"); the Planisphere, General map of the globe (18" x 27").
Color maps: Africa (19" x 15 1/4"); America Septentrional (North America) (17" x 14") and South America (17" x 13")
There are 23 full page engravings of peoples of the world in their native costume. These depictions are like snapshots from history, the clothing and mannerisms are fascinating.
There are 24 full page portrait engravings of "savage" people in their native costume. These are also fascinating as they include "savages" from Tahiti, Africa, New Zealand and Iceland.
There is much information about the discoveries within the United States.
The bindings are of full marbled calf. The spines are gilt tooled into six compartments: two contain a central gilt tooled medallion with fleurons at the angles, two are completely filled by a gilt tooled harlequin pattern interspersed with dots and two contain the title and number plate (both of dark green Morocco leather). There are marbled endpapers and page edges. Each volume measures: 8 1/8" x 5".
The bindings are in good condition. There is professional restoration to some heads and back corner edges of some bindings (very well done, preserving the integrity of the bindings). The color of the leather remains rich and true, the dark green Morocco title and number plates retain their deep color. There is some foxing to the text, but overall the engravings are not much effected. The engravings remain in a clear and dimensional state.
Complete sets in the subject of ancient voyages, with engravings and maps are difficult to fine in today's market, making this set an excellent investment. The engravings and maps (some of which sell in today's market for $400 each) have intrinsic future value on their own.
