This jewel-like little book was given as a prize by the school, Pension Neukirchner. It was awarded to Sidonie Bregeaud, student of the 4th level. The original prize ticket, which is attached to the inside cover board is signed by Madam Neukirchner of the school in Nantes.
The binding is a little work of art. The cover boards are of deep navy hardened paper. A custom made plaque, dipped in gilt, has been applied to the boards (with heat), making a very intricate "inlaid" design of gilt. The heat causes the gilt to emboss into the background, giving a raised, almost metal like texture to the overall design.
The French text, written for a youth, is easily read by intermediate students of French today. The text is enhanced by one frontispiece engraving. The book was published by Barbou Freres in Limoges, France. The title, Jeanne, recounts the history of Jeanne of Portugal (1438-1475), who became Queen of Castille.
The books is diminutive in size, measuring 5 1/2" x 3", 5/8" thick. It has survived the 160 years in very good condition, with minimal wear (which is amazing). The gilt of the spine has faded and there is some fading to the gilt along the spine on the cover boards. The book is sound, pages still attached. It would make a beautiful accessory for a desk vignette, or a lovely present for a student of French.
