Antique Nineteenth Century French Books: Lettres d'Exil circa 1885 with important Armorial Provenance from the Bibliotheque of Lord Derby

A handsome four-volume complete set, bound in (rarely found) midnight blue Morocco leather, it bears important provenance from the bibliotheque of Lord Derby of England.

Lord Derby (Edward Henry Stanley, 15th Earl of Derby KG, PC, FRS --21 July 1826 – 21 April 1893), was a British statesman and member of the "Ordre de la Jarretière" (order of the Garter) knighthood. Lord Derby was an important man in history and had an extensive and active political career.

The French text is the work of Edgar Quinet (1803-1875), who was a pronounced republican, and something of a revolutionary. He joined the rioters during the 1848 Revolution which overthrew King Louis-Philippe of France, and was elected by the département of Ain to the Constituent and then to the Legislative Assembly, where he affiliated with the extreme radical party. He was the author of numerous works, published between 1877 and 1879.

This title, consisting of letters written by Quinet, was published by his second wife, in 1885 after his death. It was published by Calmann Levy in Paris (ancient publishing house of Michel Levy Freres).

The bindings are sumptuous, in very fine (and rarely found), polished midnight blue calf leather. Each cover board has a fine gilt tooled frame (Greek key tool) and each bears the gilt armorial crest of Lord Derby in the center of the front cover board. The spines are elaborately gilt tooled, with red Morocco leather title plates. The endpapers are marbled, as are the page edges.

The four volume set is in very good and sound condition. The spines are slightly faded from remaining in the light on a bibliotheque shelf, but the cover boards still retain their rich hue. There is slight wear to the binding edges, only volume four shows a very slight area of damage to the leather (back cover board). Each binding measures: 7 1/4" x 4 5/8" x 1 1/8" thick. (We are happy to furnish additional photos of any volumes upon request).

It is a wonderful French edition with important English provenance.
