This early edition was translated from the original Greek into the French language by the Abbe Terrasson and published in Amsterdam by Francois Changuion in 1743. In Paris, during the eighteenth century many titles were published outside of the country because they were forbidden by the Cardinal to be published in France.
The translated text is the work of Diodorus Siculus (d. after 21 B.C), a Sicilian historian. He wrote, in Greek, a world history (which covers Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Scythian, Arabian, and North African history and parts of Greek and Roman history). In eighteenth century France, every chateau had a large leather bound library and this subject matter would have been "a must" for any proper French eighteenth century library.
It is complete in seven volumes (in-12-- measuring 6 3/4" x 4"). The bindings are of fine eighteenth century polished calf. The spines are decoratively gilt tooled (this would have been applied by hand using tiny iron tools), with fleurons and arabesques filling in the compartments between the raised bands. The title and number plates are of red and green Morocco leather. The bindings have marbled endpapers and red page edges.
Of importance to this set is the provenance, the gilt stamp ex-libris in the bottom compartments indicating that this title was custom bound for "ADR JOS HAVE".
The title plates are in red and black ink, with frontispiece vignettes. The text is accented by decorated capitals.
The volumes are in very good and sound condition for their age, over 250 years old. There is some small loss of leather to the cover boards (see photos) and some small joint splits (volume II, III, IV and V). We are happy to furnish additional photos upon request.
They would make a fine addition to an eighteenth century library today, large or small. They are marvelous examples of fine bookbinding, an art which is completely lost to us today.
