This beautiful little book is part of an important historical collection. The Gotha Almanach originated as a directory of Europe's royalty and higher nobility. First published in 1763 by C.W. Ettinger in Gotha at the ducal court of Frederick III, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, it came to be regarded as an authority in the classification of monarchies and their courts, reigning and former dynasties, princely and ducal families, and the genealogical, biographical and titulary details of Europe's highest level of aristocracy. It was published from 1785 annually by Justus Perthes Publishing House in Gotha, until 1944 when the Soviets destroyed the Almanach de Gotha's archives.
The binding is of thick paper board, with an overlay engraving. The front and back cover boards present a shield, suit of armor and flanking lamps at the corners. The year of publication is placed on the shield on the back board. The pages of the binding are gilt edged.
There is one frontispiece engraving. Other engravings include: ROYAL PORTRAITS (Jerome Napoleon, Friedrich August King of Saxe, Friedrich King of Wurttenberg, Maximilian Joseph King of Baviere/ MILITARY: Garde Royale de Suede/ MONUMENTS:Malmaison, Pont d'Austerlitz in Paris, Facade du Palais du Corps Legislatif in Paris, Kaiser Franzens Brunnen Eger,Les Bains a Leuck in Vallois, France.
The French text also presents measures, distances and populations throughout the world for the year 1809 and historical time lines for the years 1807 and 1808.
These little almanachs make fascinating collections as they document history both in text and engraved imaged. This is a handsome and very early example.
