These are rare examples (two volumes, complete), from the bibliotheque of Chateau of Plessis-Bourre in the Loire Valley of the important illustrated edition of the much cherished work of Cervantes. The text was published in La Haye, by Chez Bleuet.
The bindings are of full calf. The cover boards have a triple gilt filet frame. The spines are flat with six wide hand tooled gilt compartments, each of which is filled by a central fleuron surrounded by arabesques and circles. The title plate is of red Morroco leather, the number plate of citron Morocco leather. Both plates are gilt tooled. The binding measures:7 3/8" x 4 1/2". The page edges and end papers are marbled.
It contains 31 important copper plate engraved illustrations with designs by Charles Antoine Coypel (25), François Boucher (1), Pierre-Charles Trémolières (2), Jacques-Philippe Le Bas (1) and Charles-Nicolas Cochin "filius" (2) by R. Brunet after La Haye. The engravings are exquisite and fine with vivid detail and dimension.
The bindings have an 18th century stamped ex-libris "Plessis-Bourre" from the Château du Plessis-Bourré in the Loire Valley in France (a 15th century chateau which is now a public monument).
The bindings are in very good condition. There is very light wear to the binding edges as is typical with age. The front cover of volume two has some slight scuff marks toward the bottom. The text is clean and crisp. The spines have little wear and still retain the deep coloring.
They are precious eighteenth century French bindings with important historical provenance.
