This is an exquistie religious book published in Paris by Chez Vincens Pere et Fils between 1860-1870. The binding is of a very fine quality for this genre of text.
The very sumptuous velvet binding has been embellished by the use of blind stamping on the front and back cover boards. The stamp applied a central medallion, with a wide frame of flowers, vines and rosettes at the corners. A single blind embossed filet separates this frame from the outer one which consists of a chain of rosettes.
The spine has a large blind embossed medallion at the center. The title is stamped in gilt, there is a small gilt rose at the center. The page edges are gilt tipped, there is a very fancy, decorative gilded brass fermeture (latch) with a central cross. There are three full page engraved medallions included with the French/Latin text: La Tres Sainte Vierge, Sainte Victoire, and Saint Louis de Gonzague.
The binding has been carefully guarded over the years and has survived in amazing condition (there is a cardboard cover which fits over the book, then the book is placed in a cardboard etui (box)....these are included with the book.) The velvet has no real noticeable wear. Some of the gilding to the spine has faded with time in accordance with age. The fermeture (latch) survives in excellent condition. There is some very slight spotting to the text but only in accordance with age. It measures: 4 7/8" x 3 1/8" x 1 1/8" thick.
It is an exceptional example of a French Paroissien bound in the utmost luxury.
