Rare Antique Eighteenth Century French Binding, "Figures de la Bible" circa 1767
It was published in Paris by G. Desprez, in 1767. There is an engraved frontispiece by C.N. Cochin and a vignette title by K Audran. The title page is printed in red and black ink.
This is an incredible edition. Beloved Bible stories are fantastically illustrated from Genesis to the Apocalypse. The engraved vignettes are highly detailed with much detail given to the foreground and background. Each text begins with a decorated capital, the words are in 18th century old French.
The binding is of 18th century "cat's paw" polished calf. The spine has five raised bands forming compartments filled by a central gilt tooled fleuron flanked by gilt tooled arabesques. The title is gilt tooled in the second compartment. There are gilt tooled fleurons at the angles of each cover board as well as a double gilt tooled filet frame. The page edges and endpapers are marbled. The binding measures: 11 1/2" x 8 1/2" x 2 1/2" thick (in-4/quatro).
The binding has wear in consistency with age. The joint of the spine has separated slightly (the joint remains solid and the boards are in no danger of coming apart). There is wear to the leather of the back cover, edges and corners typical with age. There is wear to the head and foot of the spine. The binding is the original 18th century binding, and considering the age of 245 years, it has survived in remarkable condition.
The engravings retain their original deep, rich color. The text remains clear. Each of the vignette engravings measure: 4" x 6". The exact Bible verse from which the engraving is taken is cited in the right side margin. The detail of the illustrations is so exceptional that the characters from each story clearly come to life from the page.
This binding is a rare treasure. The fine engravings are a testimony to the mastery of the 18th century book industry.
