Rarely do we see an almanach which is dedicated to music. This is a wonderful example, and is enhanced by twelve exquisite vignette engravings.
The text presents music of the Composers: Garet, Bouffet, Dreuilh, Berton, Gatayes, Wilhem, Chevalier La Miere de Corvey,Goule, , Garaude, Desforges, Boieldieu, Champein, Dourlen, Pradher, Courtin, Anson, Beauplan, D'Alvimare, Fabry-Garat, Jardin, Lamparelli, Lelu, Lorin, Moreau, Naderman, Nicolo, Renault, and Romagnesi.
Short romantic lyrics are interspersed between the airs. There is a calender for the year 1819 with tables for the seasons, festivals, eclipes, moon phases, Saint's Days as well as an Ecclesiastic calender.
The vignette engravings are absolutely stunning, they are executed with the finest of detail. Each depicts a scene from an air or a lyric.
The binding is known in French as a "cartonnage" or hard paper binding. This type of binding was popular in the early 19th century for publication of these small almanachs. This example is in a brilliant shade of apple green. The cover boards have a 1/2" wide gilt tooled border of scrolls, filigree and flowers. The spine has a gilt tooled design of large urns and scrolls. The book survives with it's original "etui" or box. The box is gilt embossed in the same manner as the cover boards. The interior is of a rose pink. The exterior of the box has darkened from the original color (while doing it's duty to protect the binding from wear).
The text is in French. The page edges are tipped in gilt. The binding measures: 4 3/4" x 3 1/8" x 5/8" thick. The box is very slightly larger and fits over the book like a glove.
The binding has survived in excellent condition There is little wear to the edges and corners. There is slight darkening from use and age but the brilliant color remains fresh as bright as in the original state. The text is in a clean state. The box color has darkened over time with use and light. The box remains sturdy and has little wear to the corners or edges.
It is a early and rare edition of a lyrical ladies almanach.
