Intaglio crystal belt, Czech
Rare in the extreme.
Cupid and his arrows?
This belt should have its own exhibit in the Corning Museum of Glass. I have never seen such a beautiful and rare example of the Art of Czech glass. The intaglio belt buckle is simply magnificent, rivaling anything found in the Museum. The buckle is stamped, Made In Czechoslovakia and is adorned with large, gorgeous, clear faceted crystals.
The belt itself is comprised of five rows of clear, open backed, bezel and prong set, art glass crystals, connected by a multi strand, metal woven chain, very fluid design. Very intricate and the overall effect is breath taking.
The buckle measures 3 ¼" east to west, it has one small shallow flake on the inside by the hook clasp, visible with a loupe, and does not affect the integrity of the buckle, it will last at least another 100 years. The construction is smooth and the belt does not catch on material.
The buckle originally had some kind of shellac painted on the back to highlight the carving, and make it stand out and some of it has worn off. It could all be removed and / or replaced, easily.
Total length of 33", you can wear it around your waist or as a hip belt, like my model.
This could be Art Deco, but I believe it is a bit older.
