Porcelain Incense Burner with Lid
This porcelain incense burner (lu in Chinese) with its lid [86A] has a Chinese "Antique Approved for Export" wax seal on the bottom of the censor. It was hand modeled and white glaze fired before outlined designs and washed-in enamel colors were hand painted and fired in the demi grand feu ( a relatively low temperature muffle stove).[73B] Outlines of the cover's flat rim and censer vents are penciled in silver. (worn)
The motif on the old censer's box are lange lizen (women) and hua (flowers) in black pencil with washed-in, and over orange and green enamels.[73C] The back has four character marks in black. The lid exhibits floral, butterfly and a Taoist or Buddhist ribbon-tied symbol in the same colors as the box with a little French pink (from a gold salt).[73D]
