An African carved wood Maternity figure from the Chokwe tribe Angola . These figures were generally used on shrines to petition for fertility and a successful birth. The African people revere the woman's important place in society for the continuity of human life. This piece is being deaccessioned from my collection of African tribal art. Some age however difficult to date because artists in the tribes made figures to sell. Height 10 & 3/4 inches....Base 3 X 2 & 1/2 inches.
