Antique 19th Century Victorian Hand Fan - Signed

This lovely Victorian fan was made in England in 1872. It is signed: "Barriere, 1872". The fan measures 11 X 21". The mount is hand painted on black silk showing a lady in a flowing gown, cherubs, and ribbons of flowers and netting. It has beautiful black-lip Mother of Pearl sticks and guards. The Mother of Pearl was a favorite material for fan sticks and guards due to the beauty of its iridescent color.

The black-lip variety of these fan sticks comes from Tahiti and the Cook Islands. Considering the age and the delicacy of silk, this fan is in good condition. There are some tears where the delicate fabric joins the sticks and along the length of the guards, which is to be expected. The paint colors are still bright and vibrant. It is difficult to show the beauty of this fan in the photographs because the black silk is very reflective.

It comes with a beautifully carved gilt frame with pink velvet lining. This fan was described and dated by Betsy Smith, a well-known restorer and appraiser of beautiful fans.
