American Art - Tom Lovell: “Fire Outside the Window” preliminary study

57 x 31 cm (22 ½ x 12 inches) pastel and pencil on tan paper, signed lower center. One-inch tear on the upper left corner; 3-inch area of soiling on the lower right corner; minor smudges around left figure's head; darker zone under previous matting; otherwise in good condition. Not framed. Can be sent with the original matt.

Walt Reed wrote in The Illustrator in America: "Tom Lovell (1909-1997) was an intense, serious artist who drove himself to the point of perfection in his documentary approach to illustration; no detail of research was too small to be verified." [Birth date corrected]

This is a fine example of his preparatory work for a 22 x 16 in. illustration. This sale includes a complimentary 51 x 40.5 cm (20 x 16 inches) photograph of the final illustration art.

Tom Lovell is a major name in classic American illustration art, with many six-figure sales at recent auctions.
