American Art - Horace Gilmore: Danger at Sea - Vintage Oil Painting

64 x92 cm (25 x 36 inches) oil on canvas, not signed, not framed. The canvas has been re-lined with a plastic backing; minor craquelure visible lower right; otherwise in very good condition. Not framed.

A combat scene involving a sailboat, in dark blue tones with Gilmore's typical large brushstrokes and heavy impasto ; most probably an illustration for a magazine story.

Horace Gilmore, who died in 1999, studied art at Syracuse 1923 - 1925 ; he was active primarily until the 1950s.
