American Art - President Kennedy: Vintage Portrait Painting
24 x 30 acrylic on canvas, signed lower right. Seven-inch tear along the lower-left edge of the painted "stretcher". One-inch tear near the glass. Attrition along the lower right edge, near the frame. Framed in a new frame to an overall size of 28 x 35 in (72 x 89 cm).
A fine large formal portrait of President John F. Kennedy by Santa Barbara portrait artist Joe Makray (1920-1996), dating circa 1977. An interesting composition of an incomplete canvas within the painting.
Many of Makray's works who are not in private collections hang at Harry's Plaza Cafe in Santa Barbara, where he was a regular. His portrait of Louis Lancaster, a founder of Santa Barbara Bank & Trust, is on display in the Carrillo Street branch. (Source: the artist's daughter, Diane Makray Waterhouse.)
