American Art - Longing: Vintage Original Illustration Oil Painting
A girl is waiting on the doorstep of a farmhouse. A dog outside is also waiting, suggesting that its master is expected. A lone bird provides a sense of space and freedom. The viewer is inside, also waiting.
This was probably the original art for the illustration of a magazine story. I am including Walter Biggs's "She Had Turned Away" (in Harper's 1913) as an example of a similar illustration.
The black and white treatment can be explained by the original use of this illustration: it was meant to be transformed into a black and white etching for publication. It also makes it very easy to match any environment!
