French, 19th Century Wicker Basket, rectangular shape with two handles. While most baskets were utilitarian and served as packaging for transporting foods, ornamental baskets like this one were more ornamental. Equipped with decorative handles, many open baskets were intended to be placed in the middle of the kitchen table or on a sideboard. They would be filled with fruit, vegetables or fresh eggs.
This basket is in excellent condition and has a very nice patina. I purchased it with its 1" gingham ribbon laced along the bottom edge.
