Samuel Kirk, America's oldest silversmith, began his career after his apprenticeship in 1815. He and/or his sons were in business until Stieff purchased the company in 1979 and they became Kirk Stieff. Samuel Kirk was well known for bringing repousse silversmithing to America. Repousse is a method of designing by hammering from underneath the metal to make the gorgeous design on top. Kirk also designed and produced the "Repousse" flatware pattern which has often been imitated.
