This is a lovely Edwardian Cameo dated late 1800s to early 1900s and beautifully translucent when held up to light. Set in 9K+ yellow gold with a beautifully engraved pattern.
She is perhaps Polymnia, or Polyhymnia, the Muse of the sublime hymn.
Please note that the "white" you are seeing on the frame is a reflection of the cloth that it is sitting upon and those areas are actually yellow.
The hand etched gold bezel setting is lovely, and a perfect example of the era and compliments the cameo beautifully.
The skilled artisan used all three strata of the shell, carefully left a touch of the darker portion of the shell to give her garment and her cheek a slight blush creating beautiful dimension and perspective to this piece of art.
It is carved with intricate detail in the eyes, mouth, nose, gown, and hair. There are fine wisps of hair at the ear line. The nose is long, representative of an early period cameo.
This hand carved cameo is made of shell, carved in one piece. You can see very fine markings from the tools that the artisan craftsman used.
In excellent condition with no chips or crazing.
It measures approximately 1- 5/8 inches in height and 1-1/4 inches in length. It is is excellent vintage condition. The gold setting has been professionally tested and is 9K gold. .
