Matched Pair-Antique Japanese Kutani Hair Polychrome Vessels w/ Lids-1890

These two marvelously attractive gems are quite unusual in their sharp and the fact that we have a matching pair in nearly ideal antique condition is quite exciting. Located on the bottom are the artisan's red chops and identifying information. The Japanese women would store their facial power inside these petite and delicate vessels, especially during the Maiji era of 1880 to 1890, with this rare matched complete with their original lids. The specific group of artisans producing these particular polychrome examples, created many still on the market but very rarely are a matched set with snugly fitting original lids.

Starting at the top of these Kutani ceramic vessels; we have a 6-pedal; 8-pointed star, trimmed in 8-gilded pyramids with 4 Rising Sun motif. The container's expansive upper portion is divided into 4-scenic panels: number one has 3-fine gentlemen, sitting on cushions underneath blossoming pink flowering cherry trees; aside a beautiful red and black songbird resting in a bamboo marsh; 3-young ladies each in elegant kimonos as they sitting playing Koto (stringed instrument); and the fourth depicts the ideal midlevel Japanese estate setting with a waterfall between a high gorge in the background aside 2-small bamboo huts, shaded by 2-overarching pine trees.

Lusciously decorative personal panels are separated by designs suggesting a mirrored, impressionistic depiction of butterflies. Framing the 4-vignettes is an ornate structure of chocolate brown with raised teal blue dots and gilded chrysanthemums and tendrils. The middle edge is gilded with the pyramid motif with 2-red Rising Sun motif. The bottom half of these complex hexagonal Satsuma is just in its soft simplicity-we have 4-lovely, identical icon, depicting water and pale pink blooming water Lilly's with gold gilding and a round shallow foot.

Beneath the upper and larger panel sequence are matching floral motifs, framed are dotted dimples using gold gilding. Gold gilding on blue glazing is employed to demarcate the illustrative panels. Each adjoining narrative plague illustrates family's life style activities, filling the upper exposed rounded portion of the containers.

Beginning with one picture of three gentlemen chatting and looking upwards to their side, while sitting out doors next the estates landscaped home with exposed timbers, and roof. Next to the gentlemen is another vignette of three ladies working at loom. The sit beneath the home's outer eves, also glancing upward, toward what seem there adjoin plaque containing a colorful songbird perched upon a branch of bamboo. The next picturesque setting depicts the estate from a distance, set within overarching pine trees with mountain gorge to side in background.

Lining the underneath circumference, are a sequence of matching panels that illustrate flowing waters around blooming water lilies, making in five contagious sections.

The colors used are painted on its zinc white porcelain background, outlined with gold gilding, with a dynamic pallet of colorations. Masterfully applying with in our Western tradition is referred to as the pointiest technique of green dots against brown between panels; the scenes are brought to life. The songbird is orange, yellow, and green, with the structures of a gray roof, black outline, burnt orange wooden framing, and figures of stray, black, green, gray, orange, sky blue, white, red, pink, all cleverly accented with gold gild dotting.
