This is a highly collectible vintage millefiori lamp with some of the most unique colors and patterns we have ever seen.
It has beautiful colors and amazing personality as well as being in wonderful condition. It has an elegant essence to it and is the perfect size for an accent lamp.
The colors in this lamp are what make it a unique statement piece for so many design styles.
It has a classic shape and can blend with contemporary design styles or vintage to antique.
It is a shop favorite and we were thrilled to find it.
Rather than a multitude of carnival colors, this has a more understated, elegant palette in deep, rich reds, creams and dark, teal green.
The colors are offset by a frosted, clear background.
The tall, glass base has an unusual "twisted" look, making it a truly rare find.
The term millefiori translates literally as "one thousand flowers".
The art of millefiori glass-making has been in practice for almost 1,300 years and has roots in Ancient Rome.
Since the 13th century, the technique has been perfected by master Italian craftsman on the Murano Islands in Venice, Italy.
When it was feared that fire might destroy the Venice's mostly wooden buildings in 1291, glassmakers were forced to move to the neighboring islands.
Creating millefiori objects is a labor-intensive and delicate process.
First, the artist must create several glass canes or rods known as murrine with multicolored patterns which are only viewable from the ends.
These are then made into beads or discs which are molded together to create larger pieces like this lamp base.
Typically, the "flowers" that characterize millefiori are left in their original shape.
The flowers on this lamp base twist and warp at the center.
This intentional design gives the piece a wonderfully unique appeal.
The colors are astounding, boasting shades of dramatic burgundy, brilliant azure blue and white.
A long cord emanates from the base and culminates in a simple two-prong plug-head.
The cord and plug are in good condition, but we always recommend having vintage lamps rewired for safety's sake.
There is a large brass circle held up by three small arms at the top of the lamp.
This is where a millefiori shade would perch.
The colors in the lamp are such that you would have a lot of options in finding a shade to match your decor.
The lamp socket is a tawny gold-color and exhibits beautiful patination.
A simple push-button makes it easy to turn on and off.
Though the brass top and lamp socket show a bit of wear, the lamp remains in otherwise outstanding condition.
As you can see, this lamp portrays the culmination of years of training, experience, and artistic mastery.
This lamp has its utility, but also displays as a true piece of art.
