Gorgeous Compact with Cigarette Case & Comb Set in Handcarved Mother of Pearl

All the pieces are made with pretty, gold-tone brass and match beautifully. The set was manufactured by Schildkraut, a company that specialized in Bakelite, petit point, and especially, carved mother of pearl.

The cigarette case (or calling-card case) is beautifully embellished with a hand-carved mother of pearl design covering the whole lid.

The design features a rose carved in spectacular high-relief in the center with a sweet daisy peeking out from behind. The center of the daisy is accented with a tiny white pearl. There is one pearl missing from the cover but it doesn’t detract from the design.

As you can see, the interior of the case features a sensational engine-turned pattern of overlapping circles. A hinged arm moves back and forth and keeps cigarettes or cards perfectly in place.

The original gold sticker can be seen on the underside of the lid and reads “Hand Carved, Genuine Mother of Pearl, by Schildkraut, Cultured Pearl Inlay”.

A simple push-latch on the side lets the case open easily and close securely. There a few dark spots on the underside of the case and some other small areas of wear.

The compact is similar to the cigarette case and features a similar “rose and daisy” hand-carved design in mother of pearl on the lid. Though the pearl is missing from the center of the daisy, a sweet little pearl accents the center of the rose.

Upon opening the compact you will find a large reservoir for powder covered by a large brass lid. A tiny latch on the side allows it open when slid to the right. The mirror is mostly missing from the underside, though a small piece still remains.

There are some areas of wear on the interior as well as some remaining powder. The underside of the case also shows some wear, as does the mother of pearl carving.

Finally, the folding comb also boasts a gorgeous mother of pearl handle with a hand-carved floral design and tiny cultured pearl accents.

When the comb is folded, you can see the smooth edge while the teeth are tucked neatly into the decorated case.

The comb pulls out easily on a small hinge at the bottom. It exhibits some areas of wear and darkening. A sticker on the reverse of the case reads “Not Returnable If Label Is Removed”.

Overall, the set is in good vintage condition despite some areas of darkening and wear. Compacts are very collectible right now and this set is just so sweet and feminine.
