Silver Crest Art and Crafts Era Hallmarked Bronze & Wood Lined Cigar Box

Here is a lovely vintage Silver Crest box. The front and lid boast a beautiful overlay featuring Anglo centric symbols like a knight's helmet and the lion rampant.

Silver Crest was the trademark used by the Smith Metal Arts Company of Buffalo.

Expert craftsman from the Heintz Art Metal Shop formed the new company in 1919, utilizing much of what they had learned, manufacturing incredible bronze items like this box.

Heintz Art Metal Shop was founded in 1906, in New York by Otto Heintz. They discontinued their works in 1935 when a new name, Silver Crest, was taken.

The box itself is made entirely of heavy bronze and features a wood lining on the interior.

Interestingly, the overlay on both the front and top are also made of now richly-patinated, substantial bronze.

The motif on the front features a crest-like pattern with a knight's helmet sitting on top of a shield bearing the symbol of the lion rampant (in heraldry, this is the lion stands only on one back foot).

A symmetrical scrolling design sprawls out from the crest.

This pattern is slightly echoed on the overlay on the front of the box, though it is simply a knight's helmet in the middle of a simpler foliate-scroll design.

There a number of trademarks on the underside of the box.

The first of these is the traditional "Silver Crest Decorated Bronze" with a minuscule Smith Metal Arts Company logo in the center.

A production number can also clearly be seen underneath this and reads "2283".

Finally, you can see a rectangular mark with the words "Real Bronze" in bold capitals inside.

There is a fair amount of wear to the finish and a slight dent can be seen toward the back of the lid.

The overlay on the front of the box exhibits some slight verdigris, but the box remains in good vintage condition overall.

This would be a wonderful addition to any vintage and antique art metals collection.

Not only is this such a great conversation piece and collectible, it has great utility.

Several of us in the shop use these to hold matches from interesting places to use for the fireplace or for candles.

Measurements: 7 ¾" long, 3 ¾" wide, 2" tall Weight: 2 lbs.
