We are pleased to present this beautiful pair of opulent vintage opera binoculars which pre-date the 1940s. German opera glasses are serious collector's preferred origin.
For the aristocracy, going to the opera was an occasion to be seen, and having your finest pair of opera glasses was an absolute necessity.
These are made by one of Germany's foremost manufacturers of binoculars, Busch Multinett.
As you can see, the barrels, eye-cups and center hinge are inlaid with splendid iridescent mother-of-pearl. All of the metals are sterling silver and have been professionally tested.
The focal wheel is made of very hard white plastic or resin material. The drawstring case/carrier is included.
There are a number of maker's marks on the binoculars, the first of which can be seen on the cap of the focal wheel. It reads "Busch Multinett D.R.G.M."
This abbreviation stands for "Deutsche Reich Gebraumeister" and would have signified that the design of the opera glasses was registered or patented.
The mark was first used in 1891, but discontinued after World War II.
There are two marks on the inner bar closest to the eye cups which read "Busch" and Se. Z.M. 1317" respectively. Finally, you will see that near the interior hinge between both eye cups are three numbers: "58", "67", and "72".
A mark on the left hinge in cooperation with the numbers provides reference as to how many millimeters apart the centers of the ocular lenses are when focused.
Aside from working incredibly well, this exquisite pair of opera binoculars remains in fantastic condition with only a teeny amount of scratching to the metal.
Picture an elegant evening gown, looong opera gloves and THESE babies. Box seats anyone?
Measurements: When fully extended binoculars measure 3 7/8" long (side to side), 2" wide (objective lens to ocular lens), and 1" tall (top to bottom) Weight: 141.5 grams (5 oz)
