14K Gold Antique Intaglio Carnelian Ring
This is a tiny thing for a very petite finger.
The art of gem-carving has roots in Ancient Mesopotamia, Greece, Assyria and Rome; the word intaglio comes from the Italian "tagliare", which means literally, "to cut".
The stone depicts the classic Hellenistic image of the "anonymous female deity".
You will notice that her expertly and minutely-carved profile is embellished with olive laurels in the hair, curly tendrils, and a stark, Roman face.
Considering the small size of the carnelian stone, the level of detail in the intaglio decoration is purely remarkable.
Carnelian has been a favorite among intaglio-craftsmen since the time of Ancient Rome.
This piece has a wonderfully concentrated color, with rich red tones that become slightly translucent toward the center.
As you can see, the carved stone is embraced in an elegant bezel-setting with smooth shoulders that taper to a narrower lower band.
A mark on the interior of the band reads "14K". The ring has been professionally tested to ensure the purity of the gold.
You will notice that the band is not completely round. The ring also exhibits a few teeny flea-bite scratches, but remains in very good antique condition overall.
This little beauty is perfect for wearing on the pinkie, or try wearing it on a chain to make an unusual and enchanting necklace.
