This is an extraordinary antique wallet made from luxurious crocodile skin and embellished with sensational sterling silver.
It is over the top elegant with great style and substance. Clearly, this belonged to someone of means in the era because it is a beautifully made piece with a lot of sterling detail.
As you can see, the exterior is chocolaty brown, though it was originally forest green like the inside. This complements the silver beautifully.
You would have to know it was green originally, because the brown is just wonderful.
The stamped sterling on the bottom edge of the wallet boasts a stunning Victorian foliate scroll motif; despite some minor dents and bends, it remains in good antique condition.
There are several hallmarks along the smooth edge of the silver, the first of which reads "GA".
A series of four die-stamped marks can be seen on the other side, starting with the lion passant, the mark of England.
This is followed by the date mark "h", for 1903. Next is an upper-case "F" and the leopard-head symbol of the London Assay Office.
There is a metal-framed pocket on the inside of the wallet that is held shut by a hinged clasp along with two other openings for bills and cards.
There is one more pocket with a flap on the exterior.
The wallet's closure is in fantastic condition, keeping it securely closed while allowing it to be opened easily.
The leather is not stiff or brittle. It is a wonderful, useful size. We love this piece. It speaks to old-world elegance.
The sterling against the leather has great contrast and gives it a little extra panache.
In great antique condition, this gorgeous wallet is a dream for the avid collector.
