This regal antique brooch is beautifully rendered in sterling silver and with stunning enamel work. The coat of arms portrayed is that of the Norwegian State. This is a great size with vibrant colors and regal detailing.
This crest of the Norwegian state was adopted in 1905. The crest itself has the crown of the King or Norway and a lion rampant crowned and bearing an axe with a blade argent.
The David Andersen company started in Oslo in 1876. David Andersen died in 1901 and his son, Arthur Andersen took over the company and is credited with introducing enameled sterling and gold jewelry designs.
The hallmark on the back of the piece indicates 925 for sterling and then the David-Anderson maker's mark from the 1888 to 1925 period.
This is a very early piece of enamel sterling from David-Anderson. In the later years, particularly in the 1950's, they are noted for producing the famous enameled butterfly brooches.
It bears a heraldic lion holding the “axe argent” (the martyr axe of Norway’s patron saint, Saint Olav). Magnus Barefoot was the first Norwegian king to use the lion in his personal crest.
The artfully detailed crown at the top of the brooch and framing metals are beautiful sterling silver. All of the vivid shades of red, white and blue are glistening enamel.
The red background behind the lion is characterized by an extraordinary etched texturing, though the surface remains perfectly smooth.
The pin is affixed with a simple hinge and closes with a “C”-clasp; this is a sure sign of the brooch’s age. Its condition is fantastic, exhibiting only a rich patina due to age and some very surface wear.
This is a highly collectible piece of David-Andersen sterling enamel. Its age and motif, combined with the famous maker make it a must-have for collectors.
