Here is a wonderful piece of sterling silver tableware: the rarely-seen sugar sifter spoon. So called because the bowl of the spoon features tiny pierced stars, the sugar could be scooped and poured to just the right amount.
The spoon is a product of the renowned Baker-Manchester Manufacturing Company and rendered in opulent sterling silver. In addition to the pierced stars, the bowl of the spoon boasts extraordinary stamped scrollwork.
As you can see, the handle is decorated to perfect with foliate scrolls and perfectly Victorian designs. Even the underside of the handle is decorated.
There are two marks on the reverse of the spoon, the first of which reads "Sterling". The company's logo can be seen adjacent to this; it is characterized by the letter "M" within a shield and flanked by two eagles. This mark was used by Baker-Manchester as early as 1904; we believe this spoon dates to approximately that era.
It exhibits a rich and time appropriate patina that we would dare not polish; we leave that to the buyer.
Overall, the piece remains in excellent antique condition and would make a fittingly unique addition to the well rounded silver collection.
