This is really an extraordinary German silver cup. An exemplar of German style and craftsmanship, the stout little vessel features a number of dazzling aesthetic qualities.
Not least of which is the gorgeous hand-applied etchings that adorns the front. The pattern is a classic representation of the German turn of the century style, utilizing the classic frame shape and featuring swirling florals, oak leaves, the cross-hatching adding dazzling texture.
The handle absolutely typifies the Art Nouveau aesthetic, boasting a highly architectural shape and swirling floral embellishment.
The underside of the cup shows a number of traditional German hallmarks, the first of which is the "crescent moon and crown", the sign ascribed to German silver since 1888.
There is a silver "800" mark. Adjacent to this is a lion rearing up on his hind legs (the mark has seen some considerable wear but is still discernible); this stamp was single only to E. L. Vietor, a silversmith based out of Darmstadt, German during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Underneath the three consecutive marks is a coffin-shaped stamp. It is filled with a dark patina but usually, these would contain a dog's head; this is another indicator of 800 silver.
The interior of the cup is not plated and it is in good antique condition. The exterior, while exhibiting some areas of patina, features only some very minor dents and flea-bite scratches.
The shield on the cup is un-engraved.
We did not polish this cup so the owner can polish to their individual preference.
For its age, this wonderful cup is in what we feel is excellent antique condition.
