This is a beautifully ornate, spring-action 14k gold-plated lorgnette in perfect working order.
These are a particularly lovely example covered in gorgeous 14 karat gold plating, etched with a delicate Victorian design on the handle as well as on the frames.
The frames fold inward, overlapping one another until the level on the side of the handle is pushed, at which point they spring open, providing two highly magnifying lenses.
A small loop is included on the end of the handle so that the lorgnette may be worn on a chain.
To open, you push down on the button on the bottom, then the spring mechanism pops out both spectacles. These work perfectly which is rare.
Exhibiting only minor darkening, this lorgnette remains in very good antique condition, and has a hallmark on the underside of the nose-bridge that reads "1-20-14K."
There is one very, very small chip toward the base close to the gold edge. There is also an almost imperceptible flea bite on the bottom of the second lens, but you really have to look to see it.
Otherwise, the clarity is amazingly clean and clear. No deep scratches.
Measurements: Unfolded: 5 ¾" tall (from bottom of handle to top of lens) Each lens measures 1 ½" in diameter Expanded, the frames measure 4 1/8" from side to side Weight: 28.9 grams
