Antique Romantic Sterling Silver .925 Swedish Vanity Box ca 1908 Over 55 gms.
The design is classic Nouveau with etchings on the top and around the rim of the bottom opening.
We think this is a dresser box or vanity box for women's hair pins, but we don't know for sure. It is clearly a woman's item that we envision on top of an elegant dressing table.
It is etched with floral, swirling ornamentation in epitomizes the grand opulence of European Art Nouveau style.
The inscription on the underside reads "Minne d. 14_2_09". You can be sure that this is an item with a storied history. The word "minne" in Swedish translates to "memory".
The side of the lid features several hallmarks. The first reads "M & J", likely the manufacturer.
The second hallmark is a control stamp that guarantees the quality of the metal used in the production.
This hallmark has three crowns and is shaped like a cat's foot, for objects produced in Sweden since 1754.
The third is the date letter "F7", indicating that this piece was made in 1908. The last mark has yet to be identified.
The center of the lid is engraved with the initials C.L.
The box is unpolished. We do not polish sterling items and leave it to the owner to shine depending on their preference.
This is a beautiful dresser ornament or accessory.
Besides it's beauty, it has utility and can hold any number of small items; rings, earrings, bobby pins, hair ties, you name it.
