Beautiful Spanish Damascene Vintage Sword Letter Opener

You will notice that the sword-shaped opener has great substance and size, measuring almost 13 inches long.

As you can see, handle and upper area of the blade are decorated with vibrant damascene on both sides.

Damascene is a centuries old technique which involves inlaying gold and silver-colored metals and vivid enamel into a darkly oxidized steel background.

The term "Damascene" comes from the perceived resemblance the inlay has to Damascus silk tapestries.

The sword resembles a traditional Spanish "rapiera".

The handle is quite wide while the stylized guard makes an "S" shape rather than the more commonly-seen cross.

A stamped mark at the top of the blade reads "Made in Spain".

You will see a bit of expected wear to the gold-tone finish and enameling as well as a few minor flea-bite scratches, though this exceptionally unique letter opener remains in very good vintage condition overall.
