Collector's Dream Vintage Bronze Sukhothai Period Style Buddha Statue
The statue we are so pleased to offer here is cast in extraordinary bronze. It is a Thai piece, as evidenced by the style.
A provocative shade of deep reddish-brown covers the statue, giving it a really sensual look. The Sukhothai Period, which began in the mid-13th century in Thailand, brought forth an interpretation of the Buddha that this statue reflects beautifully.
A Sukhothai Buddha possesses a sinuous and slender body with a serene face; the effect is enhanced by casting images in metal rather than carving them;
The effect was enhanced by casting figures in metal rather than carving them out of wood. As you can see, the Thai Buddha typically has knotted coils for hair and a point on the top of the head.
This Buddha poses with the Bhumisparsha mudra with one hand resting palm-up in the lap and the other pointing toward the ground; it recalls the moment when the Buddha attained Nirvana and called the Earth to witness. It is considered a gesture of unshakeability.
This Buddha sits on a large pedestal which is embellished by a beautiful design of elephants and ferns carved in high-relief. Each little elephant wears a traditional Thai cap and robe.
There is some reddish-brown dirt solidified to the interior of the statue, though this is commonly found on bronze statues this old. There are some other minor chips and spots of wear, though this statue remains in excellent vintage condition overall.
It is sure to be a serene and beautiful addition to your collection.
