Oh-So-70's Big Brass Vintage "Dionysus" Belt Buckle - Indiana Metal Craft

From Indiana Metal Craft, a renowned maker of unique belt buckle, this studly buckle dates from the company's early years in the late 1970's.

Measuring over three and a half inches wide, this amazing brass belt buckle has serious substance and a lot of look-at-me power.

It's definitely an eye-catcher.

The buckle features a dark finish and some age-expected oxidization which gives the metal a wonderfully rich and dynamic look.

The belt buckle features a beautifully cast scene featuring the infant incarnation of the Greek god Dionysus.

The deity Dionysus (known as Bacchus in Roman mythology) is regarded as the god of the grape harvest and, consequently, wine.

He represents hedonism and pleasure to the nth degree. So 70's, right?

As you can see, the child-like figure sits on a cask at the center of the scene and raises a toast with a cup of wine in his right hand.

Dionysus is seen with a laurel of olive-leaves on his head and a fair amount of, ehem, anatomical detail.

The background is pervaded by flora and fauna including trees, olive leaves and beautifully rendered clouds.

The scene is depicted with exceptional detail while a coat of age-expected oxidization gives the piece dynamic texture and dimension.

You will find an early maker's mark on the reverse of the piece which includes a female face and the surrounding inscription which reads "Indiana Metal Craft, Bloomington".

Despite a few immaterial flea-bite scratches on the front and some teeny spots of light verdigris on the reverse, this fun and funky belt buckle remains in great vintage condition overall.

This is a great gift for men or women for a really unusual style statement. We love it.
