Breathtaking Vintage Syrian Mosaic Folding Chair

For centuries, Syrian craftsman have been perfecting the technique of parquetry which involves inlaying tiny pieces of wood, typically in a geometric mosaic pattern.

This walnut chair is an exceptional example.

Named for its origin, this style is typically referred to as the "Syrian" folding chair.

The back and legs consist of five slats each which lay flat with the four nesting slat of the seat.

You will find six turned-wood knobs on the sides of the seat which can be helpful when folding and unfolding the chair.

Each mosaic design you see were inlaid by hand.

Each color and shape is a different, tiny piece of wood that was used to create the dazzling Middle Eastern design you see here.

The chair is made of solid, light-colored walnut while the inlaid parquet consists of various darker woods and an extremely light beech-colored wood which is often used to replicate the look of ivory.

Perhaps the most stunning part of the chair is the parqueted wooden "crown" that adorns the top rail.

This heavy piece of walnut is embellished with incredible, linear mosaic designs while the top boasts a breathtaking parquet medallion.

Two small dowel-rods protrude from the bottom of this "topper" piece and nest inside small holes in the top rail, this makes storing the chair safer and easier.

You will find some small areas of damage and wear to the wooden inlay, though these are immaterial and barely noticeable.

Despite some expected wear and a few minor surface scratches this exotic chair remains in exceptional vintage condition.

This is THE décor piece for Moroccan and Middle Eastern looks but will add a touch of the exotic to any surroundings.
