Glamorous I. Magnin Black Velour Matador Hat
I. Magnin is long gone, but we found a treasure from the original I. Magnin California Marina district store. I. Magnin was founded in 1876 and became one the top luxury goods store in America.
Their heydays were in the late 1930's to the 1940's. When famed designer Christian Dior paid a visit from Paris, he toured the Union Square (California) store, which had already earned the nickname "White Marble Palace", and said "Magnifique!" The word would later be turned into a high compliment: "Magninique."
The family-owned I. Magnin was sold in 1944, and became buried in mergers and acquisitions, but the original family store was already long gone. The name was finally retired in 1989.
Each side is adorned with a decorative flourish of micro-pleated black grosgrain ribbon; this same fabric lines the entirety of the hat’s interior. You’ll notice the interior also boasts the original tag which reads “I. Magnin & Co. Marina” as well as one underneath that says “22”, the hat-size. The tags are understandably slightly worn and exhibit very minor fraying, but this does not detract from the overall appeal.
This hat is just stunning; wear it with an evening gown for a touch of retro glam. We are fortunate to find this chic, elegant hat from the heydays of the original I. Magnin luxury stores.
Highly collectible, it is sweet and soft, yet it speaks of affluence.
