Vintage Danecraft Sterling Silver .925 Iconic Thistle Brooch

Danecraft, Inc. was founded in 1934 (or 1939) in Providence, Rhode Island by Victor Primavera and James Felch. This company has always been known for high quality silver jewelry, often with designs inspired by Scandinavian makers.

Danecraft sterling was especially popular and aggressively advertised during the 1950s. James Felch left the company in 1945.

Legend has it that the thistle's significance dates back to the 11th century when a group of marauding Danes attacked a Scottish castle by night. Having taken off their shoes, so as to maintain the element of surprise, the Danes leaped into the castle moat only instead of being filled with water, it contained thistles. Their shouts of pain awoke the Scots and the Danes fled.

Others say that it wasn't the Danes, but Norsemen, who succumbed to the prickly thistle at the coast near Largs. Whatever the precise turn of events, the thistle has been an important Scottish symbol for well over 500 years.

The Danecraft signature and .925 sterling silver stamp are on the back of the brooch. The pin and clasp are in perfect condition.

We have not polished this, we leave that up to the buyer. We know it will shine beautifully.

An excellent acquisition for the lover of vintage jewelry or the proud Irish or Scots-man, this brooch is sure to be a new favorite! In excellent condition, the piece measures 1 ½".
